The Mystery of Meditation

“The creator made the senses to look outward; therefore one sees outward and not within. But the wise turn inward, in order to see the soul" (Katha Upanishad)
More even than the practice of postures, meditation has been an integral part of the yoga tradition since earliest times. The most ancient yoga texts encourage us to meditate, yet rarely, if ever, advise us to stand on our head. Yet for many modern yogis there is a mystique about meditation: it is rarely taught in class or, if it is, it often seems an “add on”, rather than a core part of the practice.
But, as B.K.S. Iyengar says, “yoga is meditation, meditation is yoga”. If we can learn a few key foundation techniques, we can begin not just to develop our own seated meditation, but also to imbue our whole yoga practice—maybe even our whole life—with the calm, focussed quietness which comes with regular meditation practice.
This workshop will seek to dispel some of the mystique of meditation. We will discuss what meditation means within the yoga tradition, and explore how to prepare for meditation, how to sit comfortably, and how to make meditation a part of everyday life and yoga practice. Graham will also lead you through 2 or 3 guided meditations. Please also come prepared for some gentle asana practice.
23 years working in the City and even longer playing competitive sport gave Graham Burns a unique perspective on how yoga can help with daily life. Known for his humorous and light-hearted approach to teaching, while still preserving the best elements of the yoga tradition, Graham believes that you start yoga where you are and how you are and use the practice to help achieve your own limitless potential - not just to make shapes with your body or to satisfy anyone else's agenda. Meditation forms an essential part of Graham’s own practice and teaching. He teaches the popular Tuesday evening yoga and meditation class at The Life Centre, and has taught meditation in a number of workshops.
