Open to yoga teachers, trainee teachers and all experienced yoga students. Students on The Life Centre Teacher Training Programme who attend all six days may count this as one of their approved intensives.

The Life CentreAadil Palkhivala began observing B.K.S. Iyengar’s classes at the age of 3 and his study of yoga with B.K.S. Iyengar at the age of 7, and was awarded his Advanced Iyengar Yoga Teacher’s Certificate at the age of 22. He holds degrees in law, physics and mathematics and is a licensed naturopath and Ayurvedic health practitioner. A regular Life Centre visitor and acclaimed as “the teacher of teachers”, Aadil’s previous intensives have inspired many of our teacher training students and several Life Centre teachers.

Aadil is the founder and co-director of Yoga Centers™ in Bellevue, Washington state and of The Yoga Centers College of Yoga. His all-inclusive style of teaching is named after Sri Aurobindo’s Purna Yoga™. In the West, the word “yoga” often implies simply a set of physical postures (asana) and breathing practices (pranayama). However, yoga teachers and serious students understand that yoga is far vaster, deeper, and more subtle. Purna Yoga serves as a bridge between ancient yoga and its contemporary expression. It integrates the vast aspects of yoga into a set of tools invaluable to those seeking greater health and fulfilment.

Purna Yoga is based on the premise that, to live in true health, we must care for all aspects of our being: the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. Its four components are:
  • Asana and Pranayama
Purna Yoga asana and pranayama are based on Iyengar’s system of alignment and precision. Yogic anatomy, therapeutic applications of asana, and the use of asana knowledge in daily life are incorporated into Purna Yoga classes, which also include the beauty of the inner dimensions of poetry and chanting.
  • Meditation
Called Transformative Spirituality, Purna Yoga meditation focuses on opening the heart chakra, the seat of the soul in the physical body and our access to the Divine. The spiritual foundation of Transformative Spirituality and Purna Yoga comes from the work of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother, who realised that the Divine is an integral part of the universe, not separate from creation.
  • Applied Philosophy
Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, and other texts are used to lay the foundation of yoga philosophy. In Purna Yoga all philosophy is based on its application in life. Knowledge in and of itself changes nothing; knowledge must be applied to make a difference
    .
  • Nutrition and Lifestyle
Purna Yoga encourages practitioners to align all aspects of their life. While caring for our bodies with asana and pranayama, we cannot ignore the foods that we eat and the way we live. Purna Yoga draws on the wisdom of Ayurvedic nutrition, Chinese nutritional philosophy, and the best of Western nutrition.

The 6 day Purna Yoga Teaching Training is a deep study and practice of the foundational work of teaching yoga. The curriculum focuses on learning how to teach asana and pranayama, including alignment, adjustments, presentation, prop use, basic therapeutic applications, and how asana relates to one’s daily life. You will learn how to teach the basics of standing poses, inversions, twists, backbends, front bends, the Opening Series, Morning Series, Hip Opening Series, Classical Surya Namaskar, and the basics of ujjayi pranayama.

The Life CentreThe course also includes instruction in Purna Yoga Meditation, musculoskeletal anatomy and physiology, and nutrition. As in all Purna Yoga classes, the course teaches how Purna Yoga is to be lived and gives you a deeper understanding of how to integrate meditation, yogic philosophy, and nutrition into your yoga classes and your life. While the course focuses on how to teach yoga, the work itself inspires personal growth and inner wisdom. The course consists of lecture, demonstration, and lots of hands-on practice.
